FRYARS

Dark Young Hearts (Fryarcorp)

London teenager Ben Garrett (aka frYars) finally seems poised to fulfil his potential. This debut uses clattering keyboards and vaudevillian rhythms to create a formidable wall of sound. Garrett has a fondness for the macabre, but he offsets his eccentricities with huge, memorable choruses on The Ides and Olive Eyes. Dave Gahan, of Depeche Mode, helps out on Visitors, while The Novelist’s Wife is embellished by a traditional brass band. **** (Four Stars)
